Scientists discover why MRSA is so deadly

Scientists studying the hospital superbug, MRSA, have identified one of the components responsible for making it so deadly. Staphylococcus aureus is a type of bacteria commonly found on the skin that is relatively harmless unless it gets into the bloodstream, where it can cause blood poisoning and create abscesses in organs such as the heart and brain. MRSA, or Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus, can be particularly dangerous because it is resistant to treatment with most antibiotics ...

Professor Colin Hill and Professor Paul Ross of UCC teamed up with scientists at the University of Alberta in Canada and with experts led by Mary Rea at the Teagasc Moorpark Food Research Centre to form the compound which they believe can eliminate the Clostridium difficile bug without harming other parts of the human gut ...

Dáil to debate on patient safety authority

By Susan Mitchell The Dáil will debate and vote on the setting up of an independent patient safety authority, with Fine Gael planning to propose a motion on it this Tuesday. The move comes on the back of the recent pregnancy misdiagnosis scandal. ‘‘W e have had seven years of scandal after scandal. By Kieron Wood An actor who sued a Dublin hospital for negligence five years after a recurrence of mouth cancer brought his High Court case within the legal time limits, a High Court judge has ruled. Edward Naessens sued the chief executive of St Vincent’s Hospital, Nicholas Jermyn, and consultant surgeon Niall O’Higgins in December 2006 following surgery in February 1994 for an adenoid cystic carcinoma. The hospital asked the High Court to rule that the case was brought too late ...
